In his new role, Bishop will rely on more than 20 years of experience to work on some of Wade Trim’s most high profile water resource- and utility-related projects. Specifically, he will serve as Project Manager for the Del Prado Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion project in North Fort Myers, which will begin in August 2010. Bishop will also focus on developing water resources business throughout Florida.

Prior to joining Wade Trim, Bishop was employed by Black & Veatch Corporation as Associate Vice President and Client Executive, where he was responsible for overseeing business development and client services.

Celebrating its 3rd year recognizing and honoring outstanding projects, inspirational businesses, dedicated individuals and chapter members who are LEEDing the way to a more sustainable built environment in South Florida, this year’s GALA Verde was a veritable “who’s who” in green building design and construction throughout South Florida. Eligible entries had to be located in one of the following counties:  Indian River, Okeechobee, St. Lucie, Martin, Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade or Monroe.

Judges evaluated nominees on their demonstration of a holistic approach toward integrating green building and sustainable practices and principles into the design, execution and operation of their project, business or individual leadership efforts as well as the development of innovative solutions to regional challenges.

The HGTV 2009 Green Home is located in the planned community of Tradition in Port St. Lucie on Florida’s southeast Treasure Coast.  The home is LEED Platinum Certified by the US Green Building Council.  It is a 2,430-square-foot contemporary home that incorporates traditional design elements. In addition to Architect Michael Carlson, members of the design/build project team were HGTV Dream Home Planner Manager Jack Thomasson along with Interior Designer Linda Woodrum, Tradition President Wes McCurry, Contractor Leon Camarda and Landscape Architect Scott Davidson.

The four bedroom-three bath home features construction and design elements that are known to contribute to an energy-efficient, cleaner and even healthier living environment.  Sustainable features for the home began by orienting the building to maximize north / south exposures for optimum shading and protect interiors from sun exposure.  Natural day light is captured throughout the house with distinctive clerestory windows above the main open living area and solar tube skylights in the hallway and kitchen.  The changing daylight in the house also creates a sense of time and connection to nature.

Modern roofing technologies such as high solar reflecting materials and a roof garden create a cool, comfortable patio space.  Even though the metal roof appears dark in color with its terracotta red finish, is actually made of a highly reflective material that prevents unwanted heat gain. Solar photo voltaic (PV) cells are discreetly and ingeniously installed above the breezeway connecting the garage to the home.  The cells use renewable energy (solar power) to lower electricity use.

A highly insulated, solid concrete wall system known as Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs) offers unparalleled storm protection and energy savings.  Water saving plumbing fixtures and rainwater collection for irrigation reduce the house’s water demands.  Healthy materials, furnishings and finishes were liberally incorporated throughout the home’s interior to provide superior indoor air quality.  Many materials also have recycled content.  The concrete foundation and glass tiles in the bathrooms are some examples of this.

LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the USGBC’s standardized 3rd party verification system, administered by the Green Building Certification Institute, for certifying the world’s greenest, energy efficient and high performance buildings.

The jury selected 4 finalists to present their projects during the sold out FFA luncheon at the Annual Florida Association of the American Institute of Architects Convention. The Foundation partnered with AIA Orlando’s Academy of Architecture for Health to sponsor this competition for the design of a healthcare clinic for the homeless. Entrants were asked to address the design parameters of sustainability, flexibility, functionality and the creation of a healing environment within the context of Florida communities.

LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL – August 2010 – Stellar Development, Inc. was selected to build the Norwegian Seamen’s Church and Scandinavian Center project in Davie, Florida. The project includes the demolition of four existing buildings, the construction of a new community center and rectory building, and renovations and additions to the existing chapel, totaling approximately 15,500-SF of new construction.

The two-story rectory will include three townhome units with a guest suite and a three-car garage with second floor storage space. The community center will house several offices for the church staff, as well as a full commercial kitchen with a large banquet hall for social gatherings. The new chapel will be used for worship and spiritual gatherings. The site will include a swimming pool with a cabana and a large playfield for recreational activities. The project, valued at $3.1 million, is expected to be complete in May 2011.

Included in the building design are classrooms and labs for trade programs such as culinary, cosmetology, construction, machining, drafting, automotive, diesel, marine technology, automotive composites, welding and small appliances. Construction is expected to start in March 2011 and be complete for January 2013 occupancy. As an important stimulus to the local economy, the school board has committed to using local subcontractors as much as possible.

The continuing contract with Hillsborough County is for miscellaneous surveying and mapping services for a two-year term.  WilsonMiller has served the County on similar contracts over the past 10 years.

GLE’s in-house architectural and engineering (A/E) team designed the nearly 15,000 SF office build-out, incorporating GLE’s identity and branding into the unique styling. Design elements include a welcoming reception area with marble floors, inviting lightning and a curved soffit backed by a glass wall. The office colors include soft green, tan and gray, with large open windows that run along the perimeter.

Challenges included configuring the space to promote inter-department communication between GLE’s corporate offices, the architecture, mechanical and electrical engineering, environmental and facilities consulting departments, as well as the in-house analytical asbestos laboratory. GLE’s A/E team designed an easy accessible open environment with the arrangement of departments and offices.

The firm’s meeting scheduling process requires users to record potential flights saved through use of the ACRs. In February 2010, an estimated 571,596 pounds (259,276 kg) of CO2 – or 204 flights – were saved by avoiding travel between HOK offices.

“Our use of enhanced virtual technology is a high-impact strategy to help us shrink our carbon footprint,” says HOK Sustainable Design Director Mary Ann Lazarus. “A jet airliner emits nearly 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide per passenger per 1,000 miles of travel. Also, because planes emit carbon dioxide, water vapor and nitrogen oxides high in the atmosphere, their emissions contribute to climate change at about three times the rate of emissions from cars.”

Project Awards

The Project categories recipients were recognized with the National Award for first place, the Excellence Award for second place, or the Value Award for third.

In the Under $2 Million category the Value Award was given to the Florida Derelict Vessel Removals State of Florida Waterways and project manager Rick Harter of the PBS&J Tallahassee office.

The National Award for projects $2 to $50 Million was awarded to Gulf Boulevard, Clearwater, Florida, and project managers Kevin Callahan and Ray Simpson. Callahan is part of the Orlando office. In this same category the Excellence Award was given to the Robinson Preserve Habitat, Manatee County, Florida, and project manager John Eash, from the Sarasota office.

In the Over $50 Million category, the National Award winner was an environmental report critical supplement prepared for a confidential client. Kim Fitzgibbons of the Jacksonville office served as project manager. A tie resulted in two Excellence Awards in the Over $50 Million category. One of those projects was the I-95 Managed Lanes, Phase IA (95 Express), Miami-Dade County, Florida, managed by Jennifer Tsien of the Orlando Turnpike office. And the Value Award in this category was given for the John Land Apopka Expressway, Apopka, Florida, and project manager R. Keith Jackson, of the Orlando office.

Innovative Application of Technology

The Innovative Application of Technology Award recognizes technology solutions developed within the company. Tallahassee office employee, Rhonda Taylor, was presented a Second Place award for her project management on “FAST” – Florida’s Application for Setting Targets.

two-story building in Lakewood Ranch. It’s 8500 square feet and a very “green” building.

Lawson Group planned and designed its headquarters building with a wide spectrum

of sustainable and recycled materials.Donald Lawson, AIA. founder and head of the

architectural firm, calls the offices “a living laboratory.”

“The building incorporates energy efficient materials and building systems, and showcases

the latest environmentally responsible products,” he says. “We have focused the design

on reducing our carbon footprint.”

Strategies employed in the building and design include using all locally available materials,

upgraded insulation, a white heat- reflecting roof, indirect lighting controlled by motion sensors,

high efficiency air conditioning equipment, openable windows for natural ventilation, light

reflecting interior surfaces to reduce the need for artificial lighting, plumbing fixtures that reduce

water use, and low-maintenance landscaping.

The builder was Tom Wessel Construction.

Lawson said the new facilities will enhance the firm’s ability to serve all clients, both local

and national.

“This living laboratory will allow our staff and clients to better understand and measure the

benefits, attributes and operating costs associated with the use of sustainable and

environmentally responsible construction techniques and materials,” he said. “The interior is

designed to create a flexible and dynamic space for creative thought, interaction and activity.

“Our corporate headquarters provides our firm with a new environment to fulfill our

strategic growth strategy,” he said. “The larger offices give our staff new resources, and

the state-of-the art conference facilities will better serve our growing national clientele.”

The firm was founded by Lawson in 1983.

Having teamed with Whiting Turner Construction on six similar biomedical research facilities in the past, HOK again proved this a successful collaboration. Having served on the CMAA Board of Directors as an officer since 2003, and as the 2006-2007 Chairman, Larson was recognized as an industry leader who has made significant contributions to his profession, industry, and association.

Larson has been a member of ASCE for 15 years, and was the recipient of the ASCE 2008 Construction Management Award for his exemplary performance as construction manager for multiple major infrastructure projects. He continues to be active in the organization as an advocate for education and young engineers in construction.

Larson says of the honors, “Receiving a fellowship from either ASCE or CMAA is a truly humbling and emotional experience for me. I am so passionate about both of these organizations and the work they do to promote the construction industry. Being recognized in this manner by both of these organizations just rejuvenates my mission to work tirelessly to promote industry professionalism and encourage young construction engineers.”

Larson joined PBS&J in 1987 and served as the company’s national service director for construction from 2000 through 2007. He was instrumental in launching PBS&J Constructors as the corporation’s “at-risk” construction management company in 1997. He is a registered professional engineer in five southeastern states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, a registered general contractor in Florida, and a certified construction manager. A graduate of the University of Florida, Larson has enjoyed a 32-year career in the construction industry.
