What: Kangaroo Care is practiced on a newborn, usually preterm wherein the infant is held, skin to skin with an adult. Studies suggest that preterm infants who experience kangaroo care have improved cognitive development, decreased stress levels, reduced pain responses, normalized growth, and positive effects on motor development. Kangaroo care has also been praised for improving sleep patterns in infants and enhancing mother-infant bonding.

“As a mom of a recent preemie who has spent many hours, days and weeks in the NICU at Sarasota Kangaroo care is near and dear to my heart. As soon as I read that some of the money raised from American Girl would support purchasing rocking chairs for Kangaroo Care at MMH my eyes filled up with tears. Kangaroo care for my husband and I was by far the best time we spent with our son. During the time we held Parker his heart rate, breathing and temperature was the most stable it would be the entire day. The health benefits for at risk babies is remarkable and I experienced this first hand. Not only did Parker do well health wise it was the most precious moments during our day. To cuddle him, feel his skin and take in his sweet baby smell filled our hearts. Kangaroo care is an incredible program that truly benefits the child and family as a whole.”
